Inuit Art Sculptures

Inuit Art Sculptures are carved often out of Soapstone, or sandwood. The Inuit sculptures often depict life in the Arctic, hunters, whales, fishing and animal scenes.
Since the  16th century the Inuit have been trading with the European whalers, missionaries and other visitors to the North for tea, weapons or alcohol.

Decorative carvings of animals and hunting scenes, became trade commodities. Inuit artists also carved ivory miniatures  to decorate rifles, tools, boats, and musical instruments.

In the 1940As the Inuit sculptures became larger and it became a form of art.

Up to this day the Inuit continue to carve pieces entirely by hand. Most artists prefer to use an axe and file, and occasionally small powertools are used.

The final stage of carving is the polishing, which is done with several grades of waterproof sandpaper and hours and hours of rubbing.
